Located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford University is recognized as one of the world’s leading research and teaching institutions. Leland and Jane Stanford founded the University to “promote the public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization.” Stanford opened its doors in 1891, and more than a century later, it remains dedicated to finding solutions to the great challenges of the day and to preparing our students for leadership in today’s complex world.

The main campus is in northern Santa Clara Valley adjacent to Palo Alto and between San Jose and San Francisco. Stanford also has land and facilities elsewhere. Its 8,180-acre campus is one of the largest in the United States. The university is also one of the top fundraising institutions in the country, becoming the first school to raise more than a billion dollars in a year. Stanford University (officially Leland Stanford Junior University) is one of the world’s leading educational institutions, with the top position in numerous rankings and measures in the United States. The university has produced a number of leaders in government and finance, including U.S. president Herbert Hoover, four U.S. Supreme Court justices and business moguls like Steve Ballmer, Sergey Brin, Larry Page and Marissa Mayer. School of Engineering – The Stanford School of Engineering has been at the forefront of innovation for nearly a century, creating pivotal technologies that have transformed the worlds of information technology, communications, medicine, energy, business and beyond.
 
School of Humanities & Sciences – Awarding 75 percent of undergraduate degrees and nearly 40 percent of doctorates, the H & S provides the core of a Stanford education and is the university’s largest school.
 
School of Law – Stanford Law School combines classic and innovative education, cutting-edge resources and an intimate scholarly community which make it the ideal environment for exploring and mastering the law.
 
School of Medicine – The School of Medicine encourages intellectual diversity in students interested in developing a scholarly, investigative approach to problems in medicine and science and using discoveries to transform patient care.
